What's actually squeaking under the carpet
Carpet itself is silent. The noise is coming from underneath it — the plywood subfloor has lifted slightly off a joist and rubs against the nails holding it as you step. Because the subfloor is hidden beneath carpet and pad, the fix has to reach through those layers without disturbing them. The great news is that carpet is the easiest floor of all to repair invisibly, because the fasteners disappear into the pile.
Method 1: Breakaway screws from above
This is the fast, no-mess method and needs no carpet removal:
- Walk the area to find the loudest point and mark it with painter's tape.
- Use a stud finder to locate the joist under the carpet — the screw must bite into solid joist, not just the subfloor.
- Drive a breakaway (countersnap) screw straight through the carpet and pad into the joist until it's snug — not over-tightened.
- Snap the head off below the pile using the kit's tool. Nothing shows.
- Test the spot. If it still moves, add a second screw an inch or two away along the same joist.
Method 2: From the basement
If there's an unfinished basement or crawlspace under the room, you can fix the squeak from below and never touch the carpet at all. Have someone walk above while you locate the moving joist bay, tap a shim with adhesive into the gap between the joist and subfloor, and the movement is gone. This is often the most durable fix because you're closing the gap at its source.
Use the right screws
Only use screws made for carpeted floors — breakaway or countersnap types. A regular wood screw will grab and pull carpet fibres, leaving a visible snag or pucker. And never guess at the joist location: a screw driven into subfloor alone won't hold, and you'll be back to the squeak within weeks.
