Why floors squeak in the first place
A squeak is friction. When you step on a floor, something moves — and where two materials rub, you hear it. The single most common source is a subfloor that has separated slightly from the joists beneath it. As the panel flexes, it slides against the nails holding it down, and that scrape is the squeak you hear.
Seasonal humidity makes it worse. In a dry Toronto winter, wood shrinks and gaps open up; in humid summers it swells. That constant movement loosens fasteners and widens the tiny gaps where noise is born.
Step 1: Find exactly where the squeak is
You can't fix what you can't locate. Have someone walk slowly across the floor while you listen and mark each spot with a piece of tape. Squeaks often travel, so the noise you hear isn't always directly under the foot — check a foot or two in each direction.
Step 2: Match the fix to the floor
The right method depends on what you're working with:
- Carpeted floors: the squeak is almost always the subfloor. Specialized breakaway screws can be driven through the carpet into the joist, then snapped off below the surface — invisible when done right.
- Hardwood: loose boards need to be re-secured to the subfloor. Done properly this uses tiny, colour-matched entry points — not face-nailing, which shows.
- From the basement: if you can reach the underside, shims and construction adhesive between the joist and subfloor close the gap without touching the finished floor above.
- Engineered / laminate: these floating floors need care — you can't just screw through them. The fix targets the underlayment or subfloor, not the planks.
DIY fixes that don't last
Talcum powder or lubricant in the seams quietens a squeak for a week or two, then it returns — you've hidden the symptom, not fixed the cause. Face-screwing hardwood from above leaves visible holes. And over-driving screws can crack a subfloor panel or split a joist, making things worse.
